Chalk the Park Is Back at Twin Coves on October 17

Flower Mound’s annual outdoor chalk art competition returns to Twin Coves Park on Saturday, October 17, running from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 5001 Wichita Trail. The event is open to artists of all ages and skill levels, which in practice means a five-year-old with a fistful of sidewalk chalk competes on equal footing — in spirit, at least — with a teenager who has been entering every year since middle school.

The logistics are straightforward. Show up, claim your patch of pavement, and create. The first 75 registered participants receive a complimentary chalk set from the Town, so there is a practical incentive to get your name on the list before the morning of the event.

Why Twin Coves Works for This

Twin Coves Park is not an accidental choice for a chalk art contest. The park sits along the Lake Grapevine shoreline and draws a steady weekend crowd from across Flower Mound and the surrounding area. The paved surfaces near the park’s gathering areas give artists a large canvas, and the open-air setting means spectators can wander the entries without crowding any single artist out of their space. On a mid-October morning in North Texas — historically one of the more cooperative stretches of weather the region offers — conditions tend to favor an outdoor event that depends on staying dry.

The three-hour window from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. is compact enough that families can fold it into a broader Saturday without losing the whole day. The park’s position off Wichita Trail also puts it within a short drive of neighborhoods throughout western and central Flower Mound.

What the Competition Actually Looks Like

Chalk the Park positions itself as a community competition rather than a juried fine-arts exhibition, and that distinction matters for how residents approach it. You do not need a portfolio or a formal art background. The event is structured to welcome first-timers alongside returning participants who have been refining their technique since last October.

All skill levels are genuinely welcome, which tends to produce an interesting spread of work: elaborate murals with shading and perspective alongside simpler, more joyful pieces from younger kids. Walking through the entries at the end of the creation window is itself a draw for residents who are not competing.

The Town of Flower Mound organizes Chalk the Park as part of its broader Special Events calendar, which this fall is unusually full. October 17 alone also includes Pumpkin Plunge at the CAC Indoor Pool on Gerault Road, so families with multiple interests on that date will need to plan their afternoon accordingly. Chalk the Park wraps at 1 p.m., which leaves time to pivot to the evening pool event if you have a glow-in-the-dark swimsuit and the energy for it.

Registration and the Chalk Set Incentive

The complimentary chalk set for the first 75 registrants is a small but concrete reason to register ahead rather than arriving cold. The Town has not published a registration cutoff date beyond the 75-person threshold for the chalk set, so the practical advice is to register sooner rather than assuming spots will hold until the week of the event.

For residents who do arrive without registering, the event is still open to all ages and skill levels — the chalk set is the only thing that requires being among the first 75.

Fitting It Into Flower Mound’s October

October 2026 has shaped up as one of the busier community-event months Flower Mound has seen in some time. The Fall Into Flower Mound Festival opened the month on October 9 and 10 at the River Walk. Woof-O-Ween at Hound Mound Dog Park follows on October 21. The Diwali Festival of Lights lands at Gerault Park on October 24.

Chalk the Park sits in the middle of that calendar, on a Saturday morning with a clear beginning and end time, a free entry point, and a location that rewards arriving with some intention about what you want to draw. For families looking for a low-pressure, genuinely local way to spend a few October hours, it checks the relevant boxes without requiring much advance planning beyond getting your registration in.

Twin Coves Park is at 5001 Wichita Trail. The event runs October 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
