Wednesday Nights on the North Shore: Flower Mound's Trail Running Series Hits Its Final Stretch
The DFW Burning Soles Trail Running Series wraps its summer season with Races 7 and 8 on Lake Grapevine's North Shore Trail in Flower Mound.

Wednesday Nights on the North Shore: Flower Mound’s Trail Running Series Hits Its Final Stretch
The sun is still high at 6:00 PM on a Wednesday in August, and the MADD Shelter at Lake Grapevine is already filling with runners lacing up shoes caked from previous weeks on the trail. They stretch on the grass, study the route on their phones, and trade notes on where the singletrack gets technical. In an hour, they will be threading through the trees along the shoreline, chasing a finish line and, for some, a series ranking.
This is the scene that has played out every other Wednesday since June as the DFW Burning Soles Trail Running Series works through its eight-race summer calendar. Two races remain, and both bring the course back to Flower Mound.
What the Series Looks Like
Race 7 goes off at 6:30 PM on Wednesday, August 5, followed by Race 8 at the same time on Wednesday, August 12. Both are held at the MADD Shelter on Lake Grapevine, the series’ Flower Mound anchor point, and both send runners onto the North Shore Trail singletrack that winds along the lake.
Participants choose between a 5K and a 10K distance. The North Shore Trail is well regarded among DFW trail runners for its mix of root-laced dirt, lake views, and enough rolling terrain to reward runners who have been putting in work all summer. It is not a flat road-race equivalent; the surface and the heat demand attention.
The series alternates venues across its eight-week run, splitting events between the North Shore Trail in Flower Mound and Erwin Park in McKinney. That structure gives regular participants variety while letting each location build a small community of its own around the recurring Wednesday night format.
Why the Format Works
Midweek trail races occupy a particular niche. They are long enough to feel like a genuine effort but short enough that a runner can be home before the evening fully disappears. The 5K option keeps the barrier low for newer trail runners who want to test singletrack without committing to a 10K in summer heat. The 10K draws the people who are training through August with a purpose.
For Flower Mound residents, the location is a specific draw. The North Shore Trail is part of the broader trail network that frames so much of outdoor life in this part of Denton County. Running it in a race context, with timing and other competitors, reframes a familiar path. Regulars who hike or bike the corridor during the week will recognize landmarks and still find the competitive setting changes how the ground feels underfoot.
The Bigger Picture
Flower Mound maintains 58 parks and a 75-mile network of hiking and biking trails, a footprint that gives residents genuine access to outdoor space without leaving town. The North Shore Trail at Lake Grapevine sits at the western edge of that network, connecting the town’s trail infrastructure to a regional resource shared with Grapevine and other surrounding communities.
The Burning Soles series taps into that infrastructure and turns it into a competitive venue for two months each summer. For organizers, it is a way to animate existing public land. For participants, it is a reason to show up on a Wednesday night when the easier choice would be to stay home in the air conditioning.
How to Get There
Both races start and finish at the MADD Shelter, Lake Grapevine, Flower Mound. The 6:30 PM start time means runners arrive in full sun and finish as the light begins to soften over the water. Anyone planning to participate should check registration details and any course updates directly through the DFW Burning Soles series page, as capacity and logistics can shift close to race day.
For those who have followed the series since June, Races 7 and 8 are the payoff weeks, when accumulated training and accumulated heat both peak. For anyone who has been curious about the Wednesday night trail scene at Lake Grapevine, August 5 and August 12 are the last chances to see what it is about before the series closes out for the summer.
