Overnight Under the Trees at Twin Coves

Flower Mound families have a reason to dig out the tent stakes this weekend. Twin Coves Park is hosting a Family Camp-Out starting Saturday, September 19, at 3:00 p.m. and running through Sunday morning, September 20, at 8:00 a.m. The event is organized through the Town of Flower Mound and sits squarely in the kind of programming that makes the park — tucked along the Lake Grapevine shoreline in the 75022 zip code — worth the trip any time of year.

This is not a drop-in afternoon event. Participants are expected to stay the night, and the schedule is built around that commitment.

What the Evening Looks Like

Activities and family games are provided throughout the event, so you are not left to fill the hours on your own. The organizers have arranged a catered dinner, a late-night snack spread, and breakfast before the 8:00 a.m. close — meaning the cooking stays off your to-do list for the overnight.

The social centerpiece is a fall-themed tent-decorating contest. Families are encouraged to go all in on autumn aesthetics — think harvest colors, scarecrows, leaf garlands, or whatever creative interpretation your household can devise. The most creative display wins the contest and takes home a prize.

What to Bring

The Town’s packing guidance is specific and worth following closely:

  • Tent — you supply your own shelter; no cabins or structures are provided
  • Sleeping bags — overnight temperatures in late September in North Texas can drop into the mid-60s, so layer accordingly
  • Tent decorations — essential if you want a shot at the contest
  • Bug spray — Twin Coves sits near the lake, and mosquitoes remain active through September
  • Flashlights — the park does not provide personal lighting for campsites

Beyond those basics, pack whatever your family typically brings for a one-night stay. The catered meals handle food, so the gear list stays manageable.

Why Twin Coves Is Worth Knowing

For residents who have not visited recently, Twin Coves Park is one of the more distinctive green spaces in Flower Mound’s parks inventory. Its position along Lake Grapevine gives it a character that flat-terrain suburban parks rarely match. Wooded campsites, water views, and proximity to shoreline trails make it a legitimate outdoor destination without requiring a drive to state park territory.

The Family Camp-Out format takes deliberate advantage of that setting. Pulling families out of their houses on a Friday evening and keeping them on-site through Saturday morning means participants actually experience what makes the location work — the transition from a busy park afternoon into a quiet lakeside night.

Registration and Logistics

The Town of Flower Mound is handling registration through its standard Parks and Recreation channels at flowermound.gov. Given that catered meals are part of the package, pre-registration is the practical move; event organizers need headcounts for food service, and walk-up availability is not guaranteed.

Check-in begins at 3:00 p.m. on September 19. Plan to arrive with enough time to choose and set up your campsite before evening activities begin — and before the decorating contest judging puts your tent in the spotlight.

One Weekend, Two Options Nearby

Families planning their Saturday should know that September 19 is a busy morning across Flower Mound. Rhythms at the River Walk runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the River Walk on River Walk Drive, and the Red Cross First Aid class offered through Parks and Recreation runs from 9 to 11:45 a.m. at the Community Activity Center. None of those conflicts with a Twin Coves arrival at 3:00 p.m., so a full Saturday is possible if you plan the sequencing.

For the camp-out itself, the window is self-contained. Once you’re in at Twin Coves on Saturday afternoon, the Town handles the rest until Sunday morning cleanup. Bring the tent, add some fall decorations, and let the park do what it does best.
